Welcome to the Himalayan Festival at the Festival of Arts, Laguna Beach, CA

For the first time in Southern California, Himalayan Festival organizing committee, supported by the Neighborhood Congregational Church, Laguna Beach, CA, presents a unique authentic Himalayan regions (Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and India) culture and tradition. Himalayan Festival is a two days event, April 19th (Saturday) and April 20th (Sunday), 2014. It will be held at the Festival of Arts, Laguna Beach, CA. This public event will showcases various facets of Himalayan regions (Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and India) cultures, such as folk dances, traditional costumes, and authentic ethnic cuisine, art and music.

The event OBJECTIVE is to bring Southern California people together in a festive environment and it also offers a platform for a large number of people to observe and experience a rich cultural heritage of Himalayan regions. This event will also entertain audience with cultural dance and performance from Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

The event will also play a vital role in creating a remarkable space to build an inter-cultural link and a social harmony in the multicultural background of Southern California. This event could extend and strengthen cultural ties between Himalayan regions Diaspora communities and people from Southern California.

Program Schedule

Day 1- April 19th 2014 (10 AM-5 PM)

10 AM: Festival Open to Public

11 AM: Opening Introduction, Monk Chanting and Prayer Opening

11:30 AM: Tibetan Cultural Show

  • Dance, songs and cultural performance by local Tibetan
  • Talk on Tibetan Culture and Tradition (Professor Dr. Tenzin Dorjee)

2:00 PM: Nepali Cultural Show

  • Dance, songs and cultural performance by local Nepali (Tilasmi Bista)
  • Talk on Nepali Culture and Tradition (Tilasmi Bista)
  • Mt. Everest Expedition Talk (Passang Sherpa)

Day 2- April 20th 2014 (10 AM-5 PM)

10 AM: Festival Open to Public

11:30 AM: Bhutanese Cultural Show

  • Dance, songs and cultural performance by local Bhutanese
  • Talk on Bhutan(Khenpo)

2:00 PM: Indian Cultural Show

Festival Attraction

  • Tibetan Association of Southern California (TASC) will perform Tibetan Cultural Show and Dance
  • Pratyusha Cherukuri will perform Indian Classical Dance
  • Harmit Ji and Rohini Hak (Ruhi) will sing Bollywood songs
  • Shivam Arts (Sonal Kumar, Ayushee Aithal, Asmita jadhav, Shibani Mohanty and Amika Dayal) will perform Suswagatum, welcome you all, composed by pt. Ravi Shankar, and Sound and music contemporary kathak item.
  • Dance Master (Rhea and Team): They will perform dances called Garba (regional dance from India) and Bollywood items. They will be dancing to Nagada Sang Dhol from Ramleela and Lungi Dance from Chennai Express.

  • Rusty Gillette is a local American musician, will present a lecture/demo of three classical percussion instruments of South India, specifically, the ‘’Mridangam, Ghatam and Kanjira’’, as well as speak compositions in the drum language known as ‘’solkattu’’.
  • Tilasmi Bista (Tia) Was Dallas Everest the most talented in 2008 and Miss Nepal USA 2011 first runner up Tia will perform 1) maiti ghar and 2) mathi mathi sailunge ma. She will also talk about Nepali Culture and Tradition


  • Passang Sherpa will talk about Mountaineering and Mt. Everest Expedition
  • Los Angeles Bhutanese Association will perform their traditional Dance and Cultural Show
